Pendower Windsurfing Guide
General info
Pendower is a beautiful and tranquil beach on the southern Cornwall coastline. It is notable for the conditions it provides in north eastly oriented wind directions where it picks up a good amount of wind swell and has a favourable wind angle for down the line wave riding. It's a good place to spend the day enjoying the beach amongst rugged scenery, taking a dip in the water and also the trail head of a walk inland through woodland to an old mill that serves food to those who are able to reach it.
Surfing is also fun in the wind generated waves and it's worth throwing a surfboard in the van along with the wind gear to make the most of the visit in case the wind takes time to fill in. Pendower promises the opportunity of ridable surfing waves solely from wind swell where other locations way well be flat. The waves tend to be short but with a good shape. Ideal for short board trickery and short but punchy waves.
Wave riding and jumping are pretty consistent here in winds above 20kts provided the swell has had time to build. It's a great port tack opportunity in North Easterly air flows. Keep an eye open for the Bigsalty 3 star Wave rating to identify potential forecasts. You can set an email alert for that in your admin area.
Features
Pendower is a beautiful location to windsurf and spend the day enjoying the best of the south Cornish country side. It sets itself apart from other locations due to it's relevance in a North Easterly / East North Easterly wind direction where it picks up enough wind swell to provide great fun jumping and riding.
Considerations
Be careful with the rocks. The beach is mostly sand but there are patches of reef on the eastern side of the bay and a large area of reef on the western end. If staying on waves until the very last moment is your thing it is possible to end up quite close to the westerly reef (that is downwind in a North Easterly wind). And quite easy to get dragged on to it. Unless the swell is particularly big though, this won't be too much of a problem.
