Wonwell/Mothecombe Gallery
Works in a Southerly 3 hours of high tide. On a good southerly when Bigbury is mental Mothecombe/Wonwell will be packed. There is a sandbar at the mouth of the river which has small breaking waves. Inside of this the water is dead flat. You can choose how much exposure to the waves you want. Any mistakes and you are washed into the flat area. It is also exceptionally beautiful.
Wonwell and Mothecombe are on opposite sides of the river Erme and you can launch from either side.
Thanks to Nick Colemann for help compiling this beach guide.
Features
It works in a southerly and is a more sheltered option than nearby Bigbury.
Considerations
Both Mothecombe and Wonwell are located on either side of the River Erme so Keep an eye on the river currents and be aware the water is likely to be colder than the sea.
Directions to Wonwell/Mothecombe
Access is from either side of the estuary. There are some very narrow roads and it will be difficult to park anything bigger than a VW camper.
From the west - There is parking in a field a good walk uphill, though you can drop off kit at the beach and then go and park, change in to a wet suit and walk back down to the beach to rig - get your kit selection right!
From the East - aim for Kingston and then follow the signs to Wonwell Beach. There is parking for perhaps 15 cars/vans before it gets full. Easy walk beyond the parking turning area, to get to launch beach.
