Horton Gallery

Horton is as brilliant as it is fickle, definitely a wave sailing location but also suitable for freestyle and even learning. Back to the wave sailing aspect: the wave breaks as a beach break that favours low - mid tide. The tide is very important here as it effects wave quality massively, so come at the wrong time, as you've missed out. Horton definitely favours wave-riding over jumping. It rarely gets bigger than logo high, but even head high Horton has the potential to punish unsuspecting bottom turners.

For down the line wave riding, look for W winds as the ideal. If it swings too north westerly, you might get away with windsurfing down to Slade on a low tide for a time but maybe not. Alternatively your options are cross-onshore Llangenith or heading all the way to Aberavon.

If the wind comes in as a SW, it can get quite bumpy, but the jumping might be a bit better and the conditions will be more cross-shore if you head up towards Port Eynon. As the tide pushes back in, and the beach break down at Horton switches off, it may be possible to catch some wave further upwind off Port Eynon instead.

SE winds can provide some good fun onshore jumping across the entirety of the bay. If the wind is quite southerly, you can get more cross shore conditions up towards Port Eynon, but then maybe you should be thinking starboard tack Llangenith?

Features

In a W/ WSW or SW, head to Horton for the chance of scoring epic wave-riding. In other directions such as S,SE it's possible to make the best of onshore conditions.

Considerations

This wave has claimed many a mast and rig. Not only does the wave break in heavy sections but down wind of the break nearer Slade there is partially submerged reef that it is possible to loose your kit on.

On a seperate note, plenty of cars have been stolen in this car park. Hiding your keys in the tyre would be a school boy error. Suprising but true.
