Exposed bump and jump East Coast windsurfing location. Clacton rarely gets waves, but produces a great introduction into coastal windsurfing. When windy, offers plenty of ramps and bump and jump. West Beach next to the pier is best on and incoming tide pushing to high tide for any hint of a wave.
Martello tower, just further South from West Beach offers the best freestyle and gybing potential, the large fish tail groynes flatten the sea out to smooth perfection. When the winds are really strong, bay created y the fish taill groynes allow you to crank up to full speed, just in time for the first stunt ramp, making for some rocket air.
Features
From 2 miles to the North where you will find Holland on Sea, to the Martello beach there is a secret. Gentle spring and summer NE winds, hot sun to heat the concrete coastal road, and an incoming tide wind up to produce really windy sea breezes, these can be regular for days and offer some of the best windsurfing here. Strong NE winds can even produce some waves.
Considerations
Spring tides bring strong currents. Watch out for fish tail groynes and breakwaters. Do not windsurf too close to the pier, these currents can take you through it.
Directions to Clacton On Sea
From the M25, take the A12 and then the A133 to Clacton. Follow the one way road to the pier. Turn right and keep the sea on your left. About half a mile from the pier is West Beach, use the grassy rigging area. For Martello tower keep going another half mile and park next to the tower.
For Holland on Sea, follow the coast road 2 miles North, look out for Gun Fleet Sailing club and park there.
